What Happens When You Eat These 7 Most Expensive Foods in the World?

I have done a list of 7 foods which I consider to be the most expensive foods in the world judging from how many times they have been featured on online sources.

Those foods that fetched some insane prices in a one-off auction will not be considered here. I will also avoid expensive food recipes in exclusive restaurants that had a combination of expensive foods in them.

The world can be unfair sometimes. We all want those fine things in life but only 1% of us have pockets deep enough to enjoy the finest.

It is even more absurd that most of those responsible for making these fine things cannot afford them!

Why?

Because they simply aren’t in the 1% bracket.

So, should you be worried that you may die before having a taste of these world’s most expensive foods?

I would say yes; but with my long time interest in food, I have come to the conclusion that our bodies are perfect equalizers.

A person taking some fish eggs that cost more than your car, or a piece of mushroom with a price more than your half-year grocery shopping expenses will still have them metabolized into four simple components.

Starch, amino acids, lipids, and vitamins.

This should not be an excuse for you to frown at those eating these foods or not aspiring to taste them.

You can sneak them into your orders in one of those vacations, because vacations have a way of making us forget prices and budgets.

Now; here is my selection of 7 most expensive foods in the world and what food science says will happen to those lucky enough to have a taste of being expensive. Pun intended.

1.Almas Caviar

Price – $34,500 per Kg

Most expensive foods in the world
Almas Caviar

This has gone into the Guinness Book of Records one of the most expensive and exclusive caviar in the world.

For starters, caviars are simply fish eggs. But what we are talking about here are eggs that come from a rare type of fish called the Albino Beluga Sturgeon that has lived more than 100 years!

Eating the Almas Caviars is not only an exclusive feeling, but also come as a special ancient dose of medical healing.

Apart from its medicinal properties, this luxurious delicacy is known among the elites as a physical strength enhancer that gives endurance to those who consume it.

To those outside the 1% bracket that want to feel better about themselves, the endurance thing is simply the energy you will get from starchy foods such as potatoes and burgers.

In fact, it is said that when this food was discovered back in the 12th century by peasant fishermen, it used to be taken as a cheap source of proteins for the hunger stricken population. Wow!

2. Bluefin Tuna

Price – $200 per pound

Bluefin Tuna

As I said before, I had to avoid quoting the price for this one-off sale of the bluefish tuna in Japan that cost a whopping 3 million dollars ($5,000/pound) in 2019.

Anyway, this luxurious fish is very rare due to overfishing in the Atlantic Ocean. The fish cannot also breed under conditions of captivity.

How different is it from other fishes? Well, this species of tuna is said to have the perfect balance of flavors in comparison to other tunas.

Sushi lovers will say it has intense marbling properties due to its high fat content.

Eating Bluefin Tuna gives you proteins, selenium, thiamin and omega-3 type of fatty acids, important for brain development and functionality.

If you want to be reading more of these long articles without feeling dizzy, eat Bluefin Tuna.

For those watching your weights, you are allowed to save those dollars and condemn this delicacy because the high fat content won’t help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Also, since sushi is eaten raw, you may want to consider the hygiene levels of its handling and also mercury content and other radioactive elements in seafood as discussed before in my previous article here.

3. Yubari King Melons

Price – $200 per melon

Most expensive melon in the world
Yubari Melon

Again, I have deliberately assumed I didn’t see the one that was sold for $13,500 in an auction because – well, money can be funny. But still; 200 dollars for a single melon! Ok.

These unique types of melons are a cross between two cantaloupe melon species that can only be produced in a specific region in Yubari, Japan under specific conditions.

Those who have had the rare opportunity to eat this melon have had only one thing to say. SWEETNESS! This melon is so sweet that the farmers decided to only sell this sweetness to only 1% of the world.

The highly priced ones have a perfect round shape and smooth skin. Who eats round shapes and smooth skins?

Anyway, aside from the sweetness, this melon, just like other sweet melons is a good source of vitamin C, folates and more importantly carotenoids.

I emphasize on carotenoids because they are important antioxidants for eye functionality. We need good eyes to see these prices.

4. Saffron Spice

Price: $10,000 per kilogram

And now to the wonderful world of spices; enters the mighty saffron. I should capitalize the first letter of the name Saffron to match the price tag. Heck; I should just capitalize everything in that name!

This spice can only be harvested inside only six weeks in autumn by hand. It normally takes approximately 40 hours to pick just one kilo of this spice.

Interestingly, more than 300,000 flowers are picked to produce just one kilogram of the best grade SAFFRON spice. No machine can do the delicate work required here.

Harvesting Saffron

Ancient Greek mythology has it that Greek gods Cleopatra and Zeus used to bathe and sleep in Saffron. If you cannot sleep and bathe in money in the current era, don’t go near a shelf with Saffron.

The spice is also said to have medicinal properties that can reduce symptoms of depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Those who have tasted the real Saffron say it has a rare bittersweet, earthy flavor that is very hard to find in other spices.

Other sources claim that consuming large quantities of Saffron can replicate the effects of a happiness-inducing narcotic.

That is so much happiness from one of the most expensive foods in the world.

5. White Truffles

Price – $4000 per kilogram

Most expensive foods in the world
White Truffles

For the same reasons as mentioned above, I will not touch on the mouthwatering story of this world most expensive truffle that was sold for $484,000.

If you are wondering, a truffle is just a kind of special and rare mushroom dug from the ground using specialized trained dogs or pigs that sniff them out.

They require very specific climate to grow and are generally labor intensive since they must be sniffed out by dogs and dug out by hand.

Their short shelf life of just five days also adds to their price tag.

It can take as long as six years to harvest the first truffle; and this is not even a guarantee. They are also rapidly diminishing in their original growing regions.

Truffle eaters also claim that eating them gives a marvelous irreplaceable feeling.

This is due to the aromatic smell of the truffles that are said to mimic the reproductive pheromones of mammals.

If you are curious about their health benefits, just look out for the health benefits of other mushrooms.

6. Ayam Cemani Chicken

Price – $2,500-$5,000 per chicken

Most expensive chicken in the world
Ayam Chicken Chunks

This black chicken breed is only native to Indonesia. The chicken is rare since a full grown hen doesn’t produce many eggs in its lifetime.

Unlike other chicken breeds, the Cenami chicken meat is also black due to its distinct black pigmentation that affects all its organs.

This pricy chicken meat is said to be tastier than ordinary chicken. This savory taste is attributed to the black pigment.

The Ayam Cenami chicken meat has been recognized as a good source of antioxidants that reduce inflammations and protect the eye.

The Indonesians will also say they love the birds because they are believed to have magical powers that bring good luck.

7. Kopi Luwak Coffee

Price – $100-$500 Per Cup

Most expensive coffee in the world
Kopi Luwak

This list would not be complete without my drink, coffee. Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world produced in Indonesia.

It is its infamous method of production that contributes to the exorbitant price.

To produce it, coffee beans are fed to an indigenous animal called Civet Cat (Luwak) and then collected in their poop.

This process is said to clean the beans and eliminate its bitterness to create a very smooth cup of coffee when brewed. Oh shit!

The coffee is top quality because the Luwak is said to only go for the best and ripest coffee beans.

This seemingly rudimentary preparation process ends up costing you an arm and a leg if you order Kopi Luwak.

Just like coffee itself, Kopi Luwak has been the center of many controversies from its price which is thought to be outrageous to the ethical concerns of treatment of the Luwak animals.

So what happens when you take Kopi Luwak? Well, you will not poop. You will just stay awake and pee.

As we shake our heads and marvel over these prices, let me know if you have tasted any of these 1% foods in my list.
